WHAT WE DO
The Productivity, Trade, and Innovation (PTI) Sector is responsible for strengthening the competitiveness and productivity of Latin America and the Caribbean through financial and non-financial instruments that maximize trade integration, investments, technological innovation, and sustainable development in strategic, productive sectors. It supports countries in their transition to more dynamic, inclusive, and resilient economies.
PTI conceptualizes, designs, supports, and supervises the IDB’s operations and programs encompassing trade facilitation, export promotion, investment attraction, competitiveness, technological development, entrepreneurship, science, creative industries, sustainable agriculture, agrifood systems, food security, and tourism. It works closely with governments, businesses, and regional and international organizations to design strategies and programs that address current challenges and capitalize on economic opportunities in the region. The Sector comprises the Trade and Investment Division, the Competitiveness, Technology, and Innovation Division, the Agriculture and Rural Development Division, and the Private Sector, Synergies, and Trade Unit.
In addition, PTI leads research studies and generates applied knowledge on key topics requiring a holistic vision, promoting public policies and best practices in productivity, trade, and innovation. Its multisectoral approach supports country departments and other IDB sectors, as well as IDB Invest and IDB Lab, strengthening private sector participation. Initiatives such as ConnectAmericas and the Americas Business Dialogue connect SMEs with global markets while fostering public-private synergies, business networks, and forums that create opportunities to advance the region’s long-term growth priorities.
