The IDB helps our member countries finance goods, public works and services that promote social, economic and institutional development. We offer different types of loans depending on the nature of the project and its duration, including specific support for socio-environmental disasters.
When borrowing member countries need financing for policy reforms or institutional changes, the IDB can help. Together, we plan and agree on the reforms and changes to be implemented. We have multiple types of flexible financing and strategic assistance to bring the plan to fruition.
Special development loans support our borrowing member countries during macroeconomic crises. With these funds, we help protect the country's social and economic progress. The IDB provides financial assistance to bolster social programs, required reforms, sector operations, ongoing infrastructure development and more.
Our loan guarantees address the risks faced by private-sector lenders when financing the public sector. In this way, we seek to attract and encourage private-sector investment to Latin America and the Caribbean. Moreover, our long-standing relationships with the governments of our member countries and our extensive experience in the region are our own additional guarantee.
The IDB finances technical cooperation programs — usually small, but essential — for institutional strengthening, knowledge transfer and studies, including diagnostics and sectoral and pre-investment studies, that support the formulation and preparation of projects in a single country or several.
We work to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through financial and technical support for countries working to reduce poverty and inequality, we help improve health and education, and advance infrastructure. Our aim is to achieve development in a sustainable, climate-friendly way.
