What we do?

In the face of the environmental crisis caused by climate change, education must take the lead in supporting efforts to decarbonize and increase resilience to climate change. This means ensuring that children and young people are equipped with the knowledge, values, and capacity for action to promote environmental protection. Additionally, we must ensure the continuity and quality of educational services in light of the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. At the IDB, we are committed to supporting countries in advancing a green agenda in educational systems.

This note identifies the challenges that climate change imposes on education systems, including how ready students are to cope with climate change, the level of resilience of education systems, and climate sustainability strategies in the provision of education services.

Rise Up is an IDB climate change education initiative that seeks to encourage children and youth to use their creativity and energy to come up with feasible, sustainable, long-term strategies to mitigate climate change. We present instruction videos, a Green School Kit, lesson plans, and videogames. These are all materials that teachers and students will be able to use in schools to turn children into brave superheroes with the mission of saving the planet.
