The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is a vital strategic partner for vulnerable regions and populations in Nicaragua. Our current portfolio includes 7 operations totaling $464 million and 25 technical cooperation projects worth $14.4 million. These initiatives focus on enhancing access to and the quality of services in health, water and sanitation, energy, transportation, and financial markets.
Although a formal Country Strategy has not been in place since 2019, the IDB maintains a continuous technical dialogue with Nicaragua through active project execution. Recent achievements include:
- Expanding Infrastructure: Increased the paved road network by 1,800 km and constructed new bridges totaling 2,500 meters. Approximately 900 km of roads and 1,500 meters of bridges are linked directly to IDB operations, benefiting 3.8 million people in rural and vulnerable areas.
- Upgrading Border Facilities: Built and equipped 3 major border checkpoints with modern infrastructure and implemented a coordinated border management model.
- Improving Sanitation and Water Access: Provided sanitation and treatment facilities for 10,000 families and connected over 1,000 families to the national water supply system.
- Enhancing Maternal and Child Health: Improved maternal and child care in rural communities by assisting 24,000 women with institutional childbirth and expanding healthcare coverage through the construction of maternity homes, health centers, and regional hospitals.
