The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) is a strategic partner for vulnerable territories and populations in Nicaragua. Our active portfolio includes 7 operations totaling $464 million and 25 technical cooperation projects worth $14.4 million, focusing on improving access and quality of services in health, water and sanitation, energy, transportation, and financial markets.
Although no Country Strategy has been in place since 2019, the IDB maintains a permanent technical dialogue with Nicaragua through the execution of projects in the portfolio. In recent years, we have achieved:
(i) expanding the paved road network by 1,800 km and constructing new bridges totaling 2,500 meters. Approximately 900 km of roads and 1,500 meters of bridges are directly related to IDB operations, benefiting 3.8 million inhabitants in rural and vulnerable areas;
(ii) building and equipping 3 main border checkpoints with modern infrastructure and a coordinated border management model;
(iii) providing access to sanitation and treatment plants for 10,000 families, and connecting over 1,000 families to the national water supply system; and
(iv) improving maternal and child care in rural communities, assisting 24,000 women with institutional childbirth, and expanding healthcare coverage through the construction of maternity homes, health centers, and regional hospitals.
