For decades, Amazonia has been viewed primarily through the lens of crisis. Yet focusing exclusively on crisis risks obscuring another reality: Amazonia is also a region of knowledge, innovation, biological wealth, and cultural diversity, with enormous potential for new forms of sustainable development.

The question, then, is how to build development models that value biodiversity, generate economic opportunities, and strengthen conservation at the same time. One of the most promising answers lies in the bioeconomy.

Amazonia offers ideal ecological and social conditions for a science- and innovation-based bioeconomy. By combining scientific discovery, technological innovation, and local knowledge, this approach can generate economic and social value while conserving—and, where possible, restoring—biodiversity.

The challenge is to move from potential to practice. Scientific knowledge must be translated into technologies, processes, and bio-based products that can reach producer organizations, businesses, and markets. Improved processing methods for cupuaçu, camu-camu, aguaje, and aninga, for example, are enabling the development of new food, cosmetic, and health products while adding value and strengthening local production systems.

Turning Research into Products and Local Value: The Bioamazonia Network

These opportunities—and the barriers to scaling them—were at the core of the III Annual Meeting of the Bioamazonia Network, held in May 2026 in Leticia, Colombia, at the triple border with Brazil and Peru. Over five days, representatives from research institutes, governments, and implementing organizations discussed how science, innovation, and technology transfer can help advance a regional bioeconomy for Amazonia.

By connecting research institutions across the region, the Bioamazonia Network seeks to transform scientific knowledge into technologies, processes, and bio-based products that can reach producer organizations and businesses. Rather than exporting raw biological resources, this approach can strengthen local capacity in research, processing, and commercialization, allowing Amazonian communities to capture more value from biodiversity.

In turn, these efforts shift the focus from extraction to value addition and inclusive participation, helping build sustainable businesses that benefit local and Indigenous communities while conserving forest ecosystems.

Three Interconnected Dimensions to Develop a Robust Bioeconomy

Realizing this opportunity to build a thriving bioeconomy ecosystem requires addressing three interconnected dimensions:

  1. Volume. Biodiversity must be used within ecological limits, rather than through extractive models focused solely on maximizing output. Science and innovation can help align economic activity with conservation and sustainable resource management. 
  2. Value. The bioeconomy is not simply about using biological resources, but about creating greater value through knowledge, research, technology, and local processing. Although no comprehensive estimate exists of Amazonia’s bioeconomic potential, the initiatives discussed in Leticia show how innovation can create new economic opportunities while supporting conservation. 
  3. Participation. Indigenous Peoples and local communities hold extensive knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem management. Their meaningful involvement is essential to building a bioeconomy that is socially legitimate, environmentally sustainable, and economically viable. 

From Principles to Practice

The meeting in Leticia reaffirmed the importance of Indigenous and traditional knowledge and highlighted the partnership between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)’s Amazonia Forever program and the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) to promote ethical research, innovation, and equitable benefit-sharing.

Several initiatives discussed during the meeting showed how these principles can translate into economic activity:

  • In Puerto Nariño, value-added cacao processing is supporting sustainable production and benefiting more than 100 families from 11 Indigenous communities.
  • Other projects are developing biodegradable packaging from local raw materials and supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs in businesses rooted in sociobiodiversity and cultural identity.

Together, these examples show that the bioeconomy extends beyond biotechnology. It can also support local production, entrepreneurship, creative industries, and cultural value.

What Will It Take to Scale?

Biodiversity-based innovation often involves long research and development cycles, making conventional financing poorly suited to many ventures. Scientific and technological capacity also remains uneven across the region.

The Bioamazonia Network seeks to help close these gaps. It brings together eight research institutes from five Amazonian countries and connects more than 1,000 researchers to strengthen scientific cooperation, knowledge-sharing, biodiversity conservation, and technology development. The 2026 meeting also welcomed institutes from Guyana and Suriname, broadening regional collaboration.

A Regional Framework for Action

These discussions align with the vision of Amazonia Forever, created under a mandate from the IDB Governors of seven Amazonian countries to strengthen regional coordination across Amazonia’s more than 8 million square kilometers.

Within this framework, science, innovation, and knowledge co-production are not only tools for better governance. They are also drivers of sustainable economic transformation. This matters because protecting Amazonia will ultimately depend on creating viable alternatives that generate income, strengthen local value chains, and reinforce the value of standing forests.

Scientific cooperation can also strengthen responses to broader regional challenges, including illicit economies, ecosystem degradation, and mercury contamination. Better evidence, more compatible data, and stronger monitoring can help governments and communities respond more effectively.

What Comes Next

The Bioamazonia Network meeting held in Leticia reflected a growing regional commitment to collaborative, science-based, and inclusive development. It also made one point clear: Amazonia already has promising research, products, and local initiatives. 

The next challenge is to connect these efforts more effectively, strengthen the institutions and financing behind them, and help successful models grow while preserving their ecological and social foundations.

The future of Amazonia’s bioeconomy will therefore depend on more than scientific discovery alone. It will require sustained investment in research and innovation, effective technology transfer, inclusive governance, and financing tailored to biodiversity-based ventures. The goal is not to choose between conservation and development, but to build an economy in which protecting biodiversity creates income, jobs, and opportunities for Amazonian communities.
