Our Management Team
Juan Pablo Bonilla is a senior development leader with more than 25 years of experience advancing sustainable development agendas across Latin America and the Caribbean. He serves as Sector Manager for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where he leads strategic efforts on sustainable cities, territorial development, biodiversity, natural capital, resilience, and disaster risk management.
Previously, he was Chief Advisor to the IDB’s Executive Vice President, driving institutional strategy and cross-sectoral coordination. His career spans key roles at the World Bank and the UN Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board, as well as public service in Colombia, where he served as Vice Minister—and Acting Minister—of Environment, Housing, and Territorial Development, Manager of Environment of the National Industry Association, and Executive Director of Fundesarrollo, a Regional Development Think tank.
He has led transformative initiatives like the IDB’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative, the Amazon Initiative at IDB, and merged the Sustainable Cities Initiative with the Urban Development area of the IDB, helping embed sustainability and territorial development across strategies and operations. He specializes in integrated approaches that connect cities, regions, and ecosystems, aligning infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and inclusive growth.
He holds a PhD in Energy and Environmental Management, a Master's in Engineering Management from The George Washington University (U.S.A.) and a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from Universidad Javeriana (Colombia).
