Colombia and Peru
Michel Canta is an economist with over 27 years of experience in economic policy, macroeconomics of financial markets, and supervision and regulation of financial systems, insurance and pension systems, and capital markets. In addition, he is an expert in the administration of systemic financial crises and in macro prudential and fiscal policies.
Mr. Canta has served as the Vice Minister of Economy in Peru’s Ministry of Economy and Finance. Recently, he chaired Peru’s Deposit Insurance Fund and the Latin America Regional Committee of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI). Mr. Canta has also been the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Securities Commission (CONASEV) (now the Superintendency of the Securities Market, SMV), a member of the Board of Directors of the National Planning Center (CEPLAN), Deputy Superintendent of Pension Fund Administrators and Insurance, and Chief Economist of the Research Department of the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance, and Pension Fund Administrators (SBS). He has participated in technical assistance initiatives for various countries in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Mr. Canta holds a Ph.D. in Economics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is a professor at Universidad del Pacífico, where he teaches undergraduate courses in economic development and growth, advanced macroeconomics, monetary theory, and banking economics
