Born in Madrid, Fernando Jiménez-Ontiveros is a development economist. He serves as a member of the corps of Spanish State Economists and Trade Experts. He has developed his career in the fields of development finance policy, international economics, and internationalization of business. In the Spanish government, he served as Economic and Trade Counselor in Central America and Mexico, and as International Economic Advisor in the Cabinet of the Office of the President (1994-1999).
As an international civil servant, he worked for 17 years at the Inter‑American Development Bank (IDB), as Deputy Manager and subsequently as Acting Manager of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF).
In 2016, he returned to Spain to work in the Department of the Treasury, and as of 2017 as Department Chief of the Office of the Development Promotion Fund (FONPRODE) and Financial Cooperation at the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). In September 2020 he was named the Agency’s Director of Multilateral, Financial, and Horizontal Cooperation, and in April 2025, Director of Financial Cooperation and General Manager of the Spanish Fund for Sustainable Development (FEDES).
In September 2025, he was appointed Executive Director for Spain at the IDB.
