The Country Office of Costa Rica supports the government’s efforts to move forward on its social welfare, low-carbon economic development, and environmental resilience goals in alignment with the Bicentennial National Development and Public Investment Plan.

Overview

 

Costa Rica plays a pivotal role as a founding member of the IDB. Each member country appoints a Governor to represent them on the Board of Governors.

At the IDB's Washington, D.C. headquarters, Costa Rica shares a board seat with Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, collectively represented by an Executive Director. This Director is elected every three years by the Governors of these countries.

Costa Rica´s Country Strategy 2024-2027 aims to strengthen essential factors for sustained growth and improved well-being, particularly among vulnerable populations, and position Costa Rica as a regional leader in sustainable development and solutions generator, through three strategic pillars:

  1. Resilient infrastructure and climate action: Mitigating the public investment gap and addressing climate challenges.
  2. Enabling environment for the private sector: Stimulating private sector involvement to bridge development gaps.
  3. Social contract protection: Bolstering critical areas for social progress, including education and security, and addressing challenges posed by aging population.
