Model Implementation of Iso 14001 in Sme

The general objective is to increase competitiveness and achieve measurable improvements in environmental and business performance in 36 SMEs in the state of Nuevo Leon, as a model for improving environmental performance among small and medium enterprises. The specific objectives of the program are: (i) to expand the cadre of national professionals and technicians trained in the implementation of EMS; (ii) to improve the economic and environmental performance of SMEs participating in the project through both the implementation of EMSs and the provision of credit; and, (iii) to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Instituto de Protección Ambiental to provide auditing and training services in environmental management to the manufacturing industry and to market and promote the program. To achieve the above objectives, the following components will be undertaken. Component I, the training of trainer component, will strengthen the supply of qualified, trained professionals available for implementing environmental management systems. In Component II, up to 14 large companies will co-sponsor and mentor their SME suppliers in the establishment of internationally-recognized environmental management systems. in Component III, a small credit facility will be created to provide access to credit for participating SMEs to allow them the opportunity to put in place some of recommended chances identified during the implementation of EMS. Component IV will provide IPA with the tools and resources needed to make it a leadership institution and to provide future support to companies in the state of Nuevo Leon interested in implementing EMSS.
