Judicial Education and Sensitization: Domestic and Gender Based Violence

The primary objective of this project is to improve the administration of justice by ensuring that Magistrates, Clerks of the Peace, Public and Police Prosecutors and representatives of civil society that are involved in the prosecution and management of cases involving domestic and gender based violence are fully aware of the nature and impact of these crimes and have the tools and information necessary to effectively enforce domestic legislation such as the Domestic Violence Act of 2000. Key areas of focus will be: 1. To sensitize key judicial and legal personnel as to the nature and incidence of domestic violence; 2. To strengthen the enforcement of existing legislative tools such as protection orders and counseling in order to better protect victims of domestic and gender based violence; 3. To improve access to justice by ensuring that victims of domestic and gender based violence receive fair and equitable treatment in the national judicial system of Trinidad and Tobago; 4. To encourage better coordination among key players on this issue; 5. To raise public awareness regarding the nature, incidence and impact of domestic violence.
