Improving Disability Data in the Southern Cone

The main objective of this project is to improve the availability and quality of data on disabilities. · In the immediate short term, the project seeks to collect and compare the disability data from the 2000/01 censuses. These data will help establish a benchmark for disability prevalence and allow for comparisons to be made between disability and other indicators of social development – poverty, gender, education, etc. · Over the longer term, the project hopes to establish sub regional networks of researchers on disability data. These networks would be responsible for developing a common definition of disability and piloting new instruments to collect data. A common methodology and instruments would move countries in the direction of a more functional definition of disabilities and facilitate comparisons within and between countries.
