Preparing LAC for an Eventual Avian Influenza & Human Pandemic Influenza Threat
2.1 The overall goal of this technical cooperation is to assist countries in the LAC region with the development of their preparedness plans for a possible avian influenza or human influenza pandemic in order to reduce the opportunity for both avian and human infection and their corresponding socio-economic effects, and to strengthen the early warning system. 2.2 The primary objectives of the project are: (a) To assess the risk of a possible avian or human influenza pandemic to the LAC Region; (b) To assess the level of preparedness of each country in the Region in order to have a better appraisal of the situation (especially, for areas that will need IDB assistance) in the future in the case of an influenza pandemic; (c) To develop a template preparedness plan to assist the countries in their pre-pandemic phase efforts; (d) To evaluate current status of each country to identify the administrative, infrastructural and financial needs to implement the preparedness plans, and; (e) To identify the IDB instruments to support the countries on the implementation of the AI preparedness plans.
