Peru and Ecuador to launch binational plan to promote peace process

Presidents Alberto Fujimori of Peru and Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador will present the Binational Developmental Plan for the Border Region at the headquarters of the Inter-American Development Bank on Feb. 4 in a ceremony that begins at 9 a.m. at 1300 New York Avenue N.W.

IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias will deliver welcoming remarks prior to the presentations.

The development plan is an integral part of a peace agreement that was signed on Oct. 26, 1998, putting an end to a long-standing border dispute in a sparsely populated frontier area.

The agreement established an ambitious agenda to improve the quality of life in both countries through economic integration and investments in areas such as infrastructure, small business and microenterprise, environmental projects, tourism, health, water and sanitation, electricity, and postal services.

The presentation will also provide a forum for international donors and credit organizations to introduce the international community to agreements and development programs that can be implemented through grants, concessional credits, and private investment.
