The musical flow of Paraguay’s H2O Orchestra in Washington, DC

A unique orchestra playing music from instruments made of recycled materials related to water

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) a member of the IDB Group, present the Washington, DC debut of the Paraguayan H2O Orchestra, which, through its original and innovative musical offerings, raises awareness about water conservation and responsible use of recyclable materials such as pipes, water containers, hoses, and vessels.

These 12 professional musicians will give two concerts in Washington, DC, presenting a repertoire balanced between internationally-known musical pieces and local Paraguayan rhythms.

The origins of the H2O Orchestra lie in the Sounds of Earth initiative, a social program founded in 2002 by Luis Szarán, who has used music to transform 200 rural communities in Paraguay, working with dozens of professional musicians to build their own instruments.

In 2012, the H2O Orchestra shared the stage with Latin Grammy nominees Berta Rojas and Paquito D'Rivera. The same year it appeared with Coca-Cola and will.i.am at the American Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles as part of the EKOCYCLE movement. In 2014, it performed with singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, winner of the Grammy and Billboard awards.

The concerts—both free of charge—will take place at the Inter-American Development Bank on April 30 and at the Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on May 1.The orchestra will finish its tour in New York City.
