Lord Nicholas Stern and the Inter-American Development Bank host “Development in a More Hostile Climate”

How will climate change impact emerging economies? How might agriculture and industry in specific countries be affected? What can be done to encourage low-carbon, climate resilient economic growth in the developing world?

The Inter-American Development Bank and British economist and academic Lord Nicholas Stern will host a high-level meeting to address these and other questions on Thursday, March 5, 2009.

The event will feature an overview of the preliminary results of landmark studies on the economic impacts of climate change on Brazil, Mexico and South East Asia modeled on the influential Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change of 2006.

The meeting will also include discussions of the threats to development posed by climate change, strategies for overcoming risks and the role of partnerships and multilateral institutions in responding to climate investment challenges faced by developing countries. It will bring together high-level representatives of governments, regional and international development and UN agencies, the private sector and non-government organizations.

The event is complementary to “U.S. Climate Action: A Global Economic Perspective,” a symposium which is being organized by Lord Stern and the World Resources Institute.
