IDB Approves $200 Million Guarantee to Support Improvements in Argentina’s Electricity Service

WASHINGTON – The Board of Executive Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $200 million investment guarantee to increase electricity transmission capacity in Argentina and improve the country’s power supply.

The operation will support the AMBA I and Puerto Madryn–Choele, Choele–Bahía Blanca projects, two strategic infrastructure projects aimed at expanding transmission capacity and strengthening Argentina’s Interconnected System (SADI). The IDB guarantee will help reduce risks for investors and mobilize private capital toward long-term investments in strategic infrastructure.

The program is expected to directly benefit 16 million users, including households and businesses, by contributing to a more reliable electricity supply.

“Having a reliable electricity transmission grid is essential to sustaining economic growth, attracting investment, and improving the services received by households and businesses. AMBA I demonstrates how, as the IDB Group, we can combine our capabilities to mobilize private investment toward strategic infrastructure for Argentina’s development. This operation reflects our commitment to turning innovative financial solutions into concrete investments that respond to the country’s needs,” said Viviana Alva Hart, IDB Group Representative in Argentina.

The operation is aligned with the objectives of South Connection by strengthening Argentina’s transmission grid and increasing transmission capacity to strategic nodes for regional electricity interconnection.

This is the first individual operation under a Conditional Credit Line for Investment Projects (CCLIP) that has been modified to reflect its new objective of contributing to the country’s economic development through investments that enable a reliable and efficient electricity supply. The $200 million Investment Guarantee has a 25-year term.
