Ten organizations will receive $25,000 to support their work serving low-income members of the local Latin American and Caribbean community.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has announced the 10 winners of the 2023 Improving Lives Grant, which supports non-profit organizations in the Washington, D.C., area whose work addresses the needs of low-income members of the Latin American and Caribbean community.
Each organization will receive $25,000 under the grant initiative of the IDB Community Relations Program which was established to engage with the city and communities that host the IDB’s headquarters, in line with the Bank’s mission of improving lives. The organizations will use the funds to implement, enhance or expand their work.
The winners are:
- DC Scores - creates neighborhood teams that give kids the confidence and skills to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and in life.
- DC Bilingual Public Charter School - ensures high academic achievement for all students in both Spanish and English, developing leadership, and valuing all cultures.
- DC Central Kitchen, Inc. - uses food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities.
- Hispanic Heritage Foundation - focuses on education, workforce, social impact, and culture through the lens of leadership.
- La Clínica del Pueblo, Inc.- strives to build a healthy Latino community through varied and culturally appropriate health services.
- La Cocina VA - harnesses the power of food and cooking to create social and economic change in low-income communities.
- Mary's Center for Maternal & Childcare, Inc. - integrates healthcare, education and social services to advance participants’ health, stability and economic independence.
- Mi Casa / My House, Inc. - provides, facilitates, and advocates for inclusive, affordable housing for underserved communities in order to promote equitable, thriving and diverse neighborhoods.
- My Sisters Place, Inc. - shelters, supports and empowers survivors of domestic violence and their children, while providing leadership and education to build a supportive community.
- Nueva Vida, Inc. - informs, supports, and empowers Latino families, whose lives are affected by cancer, and to advocate for and facilitate the timely access to state of the art cancer care.
The winners were selected through a two-stage evaluation process by senior IDB specialists. A baseline requirement was that all project proposals primarily address the challenges or needs of members of the local Latin American and/or Caribbean community.
The Improving Lives Grant is part of the IDB’s Community Relations Program, which was established in 1999. The Program supports the work of selected non-profit organizations through grants, volunteerism, in-kind donations and fundraising campaigns. In 2023, the IDB donated more than 1,200 items which included electronic equipment and office furniture.
