The IDB and Microsoft strengthen collaboration to expand transparency through technology
  • The partnership will extend the MapaInversiones platform throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • MapaInversiones allows citizens to access information regarding public spending as a means of encouraging transparency.

In a new phase of collaboration that seeks to promote trust among citizens, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Microsoft have strengthened their partnership to accelerate the expansion of MapaInversiones, an initiative that develops digital platforms to encourage transparency in government spending. Currently, new platforms are being developed in Argentina, the Bahamas, and Jamaica, while additional countries are being considered.

Launched in ColombiaCosta RicaParaguay, and Peru to date, MapaInversiones allows citizens to track public investments across economic sectors. It includes information on the funding and progress of individual projects at national, subnational, and local levels. These platforms are created by the IDB in collaboration with Microsoft, which provides cloud, and design support. In the next round, MapaInversiones will feature new Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics capabilities to gather insights and improve decision making among policymakers.

“Since its launch in 2017, MapaInversiones has helped build trust and transparency by providing citizens with information on public investments. Building upon its success so far, at Microsoft we are excited to expand our action plan with the IDB to bring this robust platform into more countries in the region,” said Anayda Frisneda, Public Sector General Manager for Microsoft Latin America.

“We believe that digital transformation is an agent for economic growth and social progress in Latin America and the Caribbean. MapaInversiones proves that technology can play a role by democratizing efficient and transparent public information management and empowering citizens through tools that facilitate understanding and stimulate trust in institutions,” asserted Bernardo Guillamon, Manager of the IDB’s Office of Outreach and Partnerships.

This expansion of MapaInversiones is a key component of an action plan announced by the partners in 2017 to promote digital transformation in Latin America and the Caribbean. A central pillar of this plan is dedicated to using technology to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability across the region.
