Hypolitte is a sixteen-year-old Haitian teenager who loves to study and play soccer with her friends. She lives with her mother in Bicentenaire, a bidonville near the sea in the city of Port-au-Prince. Bidonville is the term used in French-speaking countries to define an informal settlement.

The IDB-FEMSA Awards to innovation on water and sanitation are reaching their tenth anniversary in 2019 and will be celebrating the occasion with a special edition. This year we are launching Ideas into Action an award specifically for water and sanitation utilities in the region.  First, second, and third place winners of the IDB-FEMSA Awards will receive US$15,000, US$10,000 and US$5,000 in cash, respectively.

World Water Day calls for ensuring water for all. Peru’s Andean communities are taking steps to warrant water and sanitation rights 4,000 meters above sea level. In Romatambo, Peru, at the foothills of the snow-covered Caullaraju, on the white Andes Mountains and 4,000 meters above sea level, temperatures usually drop below 0° Celsius (32° Fahrenheit) in the summer and never exceed 10° C (50° F) in the winter. This beautiful and lonely place is where Maria and her husband live. Their combined ages total more than 120 years.

The IDB-FEMSA Awards to the best water and sanitation solutions is joining forces with Demand Solutions, Chile 2018, to find and reward the best innovations in the continent. The biggest challenges produce the most innovative solutions. Over the past nine years we have seen IDB-FEMSA Awards going to innovators that harvest water from air or use original software to bring water to rural communities among other solutions that improve lives throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

The World Water Forum is being held March 18-23 in Brazil’s capital, bringing together the sector’s top specialists. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) was in charge of coordinating the Regional Process of the Americas, focusing on the continent’s water resources situation.  The World Water Forum 2018 opened in Brasilia, Brazil, with a call to make quality water and sanitation access a focal point of the global development agenda.
