William M. Berenson is engaged in the private practice of law in the Washington, D.C., area with the Law Firm of Jeffrey M. Lepon, PLLC. Since 1984, he has been an adjunct professor of law at American University’s Washington College of Law in the LL.M. International Legal Studies program for foreign lawyers. From 1980-2012, he held various positions in the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (“OAS”), including General Counsel and Director of the Department of Legal Services. In 2010, he received the Terry Woods Memorial Award from the OAS Staff Association for his “unfailing sense of fairness and respect for and defense of staff rights,” and in 2011, the OAS Secretary General awarded him the Leo S. Rowe Memorial Award “in recognition of his “innumerable contributions to the well- being of [the OAS] staff and the Rule of law in the hemisphere.” During the course of his career, Dr. Berenson has also served as a legal advisor to specialized organizations of the OAS, including the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (“IICA”) in Costa Rica and the Inter-American Defense Board. Dr. Berenson is a former president of Ayuda, Inc., the bilingual legal aid NGO serving the impoverished in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He has lectured throughout Latin America on a wide variety of legal topics, and he has been a visiting professor at Venezuela’s Central University in Caracas and the Autonomous University of Chile. He is the author or several articles on international organizations and other legal topics of interest to the international community. Dr. Berenson is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Boston University Law School and holds a Ph.D. and MA in political science from Vanderbilt University.
