The Vice Presidency for Sectors and Knowledge is the Bank’s operational arm devoted to turn development goals into a reality for millions of citizens in Latin America and the Caribbean.
WHAT WE DO
The Vice Presidency for Sectors and Knowledge (VPS) works with governments to prepare and carry out the IDB's projects with the highest standards of impact, scale and accountability. These projects are aligned with the IDBImpact+ goals of boosting growth, reducing poverty and inequality, and addressing climate change impacts. Financial resources are accompanied with research that improves projects and ensures policy advice is evidence-based and tailored to the specific needs of countries.
Operational Structure
Over 500 specialists in VPS sector departments are distributed in Washington and the IDB’s 26-member countries. They have expertise on a range of issues to deal with the most urgent development challenges, from budget and tax reforms to investing in people, tackling organized crime and insecurity, promoting private sector investment, and improving physical and digital infrastructure. VPS includes the Environmental and Social Solutions (ESG) Division, which ensures that every operation meets IDB’s highest environmental and social standards.
Research and Learning
The Research Department is home to a team of researchers who work closely with operational departments to produce forward-looking investigations and innovative ideas that support the strategic policy agenda of the IDB and its member countries. The Research Department advises IDB Group management on economic and development issues, conducts research and analysis on macro and microeconomic trends, and oversees development of the IDB’s quantitative and analytical databases.
The Knowledge Division of VPS works with technical teams in coordinating learning activities, making sure the IDB remains at the advanced edge of development ideas. The division also provides courses for external audiences.
