Colombia and Peru

Alex Contreras Miranda is an economic engineer from the National University of Engineering of Peru (UNI) and has a Master of Arts in policy economics from Williams College in the United States. 

Prior to his appointment as Alternate Executive Director at the IDB, he served as Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru (2022-2024) and Vice Minister of Economy (2021-2022). Previously, he held the position of Chief Economist at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (2019-2022). 

With more than 15 years of experience in public administration, he has worked in such key areas as monetary and fiscal policy, simulation and development of macroeconomic models, and public policy formulation. 

Most of his professional career has been at the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) (2007-2019), where he began after successfully completing the BCRP Summer Course and has held several management positions in key areas. 

In the academic field, he has published numerous articles in national and international journals on monetary policy, the financial system, banking regulation, and the real sector of the economy. He has taught courses at several of the country’s leading universities on macroeconomics, economic policy, monetary theory, statistics, and econometrics.
