Marta Viegas is the Alternate Executive Director for Brazil and Suriname at the Inter-American Development Bank -IDB, IDB Invest and IDB Lab.
A seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience in international organizations and private firms, her career reflects a deep commitment to development finance and improving lives in some of the world’s most challenging regions. Known for her leadership skills, strategic and pragmatic approach, Marta has consistently demonstrated an ability to navigate complex environments with a global mindset and a collaborative spirit.
Prior to her current position, Marta structured the Corporate Governance Program and served as Head of Corporate Governance at IDB Invest, the private sector arm of the IDB Group. In this role, she was responsible for non-financial risk management and advisory services, working to minimize investment risk and promoting impact and development in over 500 projects in 26 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Before joining IDB Group, Marta practiced law for nearly two decades at leading Brazilian and US firms, having managed over 100 M&A transactions ranging from US$50 million to US$2.5 billion and assisting a wide range of clients in international transactions and matters of corporate law, foreign investments, corporate governance, business integrity, ESG and regulatory compliance. She has been recognized and recommended as a leading lawyer in leading international legal publications, including Chambers Global, Chambers Latin America, and Latin Lawyer 250.
Marta has also participated in the Boards of Directors of private organizations, including the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance (IBGC), where she served in the Audit Committee, and the Compensation Committee and Brasilprev Seguros e Previdência, where she served in the Audit Committee and Fiscal Council. Marta is a certified ESG Director by “Competent Boards” (GCB.D), a member of the Independent Director Initiative of the Venture Capital University (Berkeley Law) and an active member of the Brazil chapter of Women Corporate Directors (WCD). She is a frequent speaker in conferences and events across Latin America and the Caribbean and has published several book chapters and articles on development finance, corporate governance, ethics and integrity, impact investing and sustainability issues.
Marta has a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law and a Certificate in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management. She holds a Law Degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica in São Paulo.
