El Niño is a recurring challenge for development and resilience in Latin America and the Caribbean, but it does not have to become a recurring crisis.
Explore climate forecasts and information on droughts, floods, wildfires, and other hazards associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Use the different information layers to identify trends, understand how risks are evolving, and complement national and sectoral analyses.
Disclaimer: The maps are updated daily using data from their primary sources, although update frequencies may vary by provider. The indicators should be interpreted alongside official forecasts, local observations, and relevant sectoral assessments. They should not be used in isolation for operational decision-making.
The El Niño 2026–2027 Monitoring Tool was developed by the IDB Group’s Ready and Resilient Americas program in collaboration with the International Research Center for the El Niño Phenomenon (CIIFEN). It supports early action and informed decision-making to help protect people, essential services, and development gains from potential disaster impacts.
The impacts of El Niño are not uniform. Explore the country profiles to learn about historical vulnerability, the main expected risks, potentially affected sectors, key figures, and the tools available to strengthen preparedness and response. We are currently developing profiles for Caribbean countries, which will be available soon in this section.
