Support Reform of Water Resource Sector

The purpose of the program that includes this operation is to support the modernization and reform of delivery systems for water and sewer services, based on an integrated management structure for water resources. Water resources in El Salvador are scarce, with electric power generation, irrigation, and human consumption all competing for use. In this context, the existence of a water authority is crucial to the integrated management of water resources. Four components have been identified to this end: (i) reform of water resource management; (ii) regulatory reform in the water and sanitation subsector; (iii) support for improvements in the management of water and sanitation services; and (iv) priority investments in water and sanitation. The specific objective of this technical cooperation is to support the Government of El Salvador in executing Component 1 of the program as a whole.
