Environmental Management

The new government has been actively developing policy on sustainable natural resource and environmental management. The President of the Republic of Suriname has requested the assistance of the Bank to develop the new proposed environmental framework: (i) an Environmental Council, a policy making body located in the Office of the President (ii) an Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the operational arm; and (iii) sectoral ministries which deal with environmental issues utilizing cross-sectoral coordination mechanisms. The objective of this operation is to provide support to the nascent Environmental Council and to the establishment of the Environmental Management Agency as well as to strengthen the environmental planning monitoring and evaluating capabilities of the government units with responsibility for managing natural resources and human environmental health.
