Indigenous Peoples and Mining in Suriname

The main objective of this project is to gather information regarding the potential impacts of a proposed PRI/Alcoa project on the Amerindian communities in the area of influence and provide information about the proposed project to these communities and their representative organizations in western Suriname. A secondary objective is to build capacity among the Indigenous communities in this area so that they can engage in dialogue with the Government of Suriname, Alcoa and its joint venture partner, BHP Billiton, regarding their needs, concerns and interests.
