Support to the Agricultural and Rural Economy in Light of CAFTA
3.1 The long-term objective is to develop national and regional strategies for a competitive transition of agriculture and the rural economy of Central American countries in light of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA). The nearer-term objective is to develop recommendations to ameliorate the impact of CAFTA on rural households and help them take advantage of the opportunities presented by the agreement. The technical cooperation will provide public policy recommendations on how current agriculture sector polices and/or programs and IDB projects in CA-5 can be adjusted and/or implemented in light of CAFTA to support a competitive transition of the rural economy that is economically and environmentally sustainable and protect the rural poor population.
