Mapping illegal gold mining and its consequences in the Andean Region

The general objective of this TC is to map the current and potential areas of illegal gold mining and estimate the impacts of this sector in countries in the CAN region. Specifically, this TC will seek to: (i) Identify the potential extent of these illegal mining activities in the CAN region; (ii) measure the impact of illegal gold mining on key socioeconomic and environmental factors in countries in the region (for this purpose, the team will use machine learning techniques and other similar estimation methods, complemented with the use of socioeconomic data) and; (iii) generate a toolbox for policymakers to identify potential areas of illegal gold mining and collateral illicit activities, as well as their socioeconomic impacts.
