Strengthening the Risk Management of Forest Fires in the Andean Amazonia

The objective of this TC is to promote efficient and sustainable forest fire risk management in the Andean Amazon, in the context of climate change, by strengthening institutional and local capacities and contributing to implementation of regional collaboration initiatives, in particular for transboundary occurrences. This CT focuses on the emerging problem of forest fires in the Andean Amazon and their growing impacts in a context of climate change, addressing particularly the following challenges: (i) Knowledge gap on the status of risk management of forest fires and assessment of the dimension of the problem and alternatives in the Andes-Amazonian territories of Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador; (ii) Identification of opportunities and definition of critical pathways to support the Andean Amazon to contribute to regional collaborative mechanisms within the Amazonian Network of Fire Management (RAMIF); (iii) Strengthening institutional and local capacities to improve risk management of forest fires with a preventive and anticipatory approach.
