ZIF COL-PE. Development of the Binational Value Chain of Cultivated and Native Cocoa in the Peruvian- Colombian Amazon Trapezoid

The main objective of this technical cooperation is to support the operation RG-G1024, through the financing of consulting studies focused on the analysis of content of Cadmium and heavy metals in soil, plant and fruit of cocoa and its derivatives; which in turn serve as a theoretical-practical learning opportunity for capacity development and the definition of monitoring and control protocols for heavy metals. The project will provide valuable information to advance the process of obtaining the designation of origin, organic certification and quality for Amazonian cocoa, conditions that will increase the value of the product and its derivatives in the national and international market. In addition, the studies will enable a significant improvement in the physical and organoleptic characterization of the cocoa product and derivatives, in terms of compliance with the regulations on the presence of Cadmium and heavy metals both in Peru and Colombia as well as in the European Union.
