X Inter-American Forum on Microenterprise: The Road Ahead

In the framework of a new initiative by the Bank to identify Opportunities for the Majority, the microenterprise sector plays a central role, given its acknowledged and documented ability to provide economic opportunities and employment to low-income people, and to contribute to the alleviation of poverty throughout the region. When presented with appropriate access to financing and services to grow their businesses, microenterprises have shown great entrepreneurship and adaptability to their immediate markets, and they often become important suppliers of goods and services for the majority at the base of the economic pyramid. The general objective of the Forum is to gather the entities, institutions and individuals working in the various fields of microenterprise development, and provide a platform that facilitates not only the discussion of how to improve the livelihoods and businesses of microenterprises through sharing of knowledge and experiences, but also of how to continuously expand the client base as well as the scope of services to meet different needs. The specific objectives of the X Forum are: (i) to disseminate best practices and good methodologies for developing and expanding the microenterprise sector; (ii) to instigate dialogues about policy measures to support the microenterprise sector; and (iii) to create regional and national networks to ensure improved access to information and knowledge.
