Strengthening Social and Environmental Practices via Conflict Resolution

Among the main activities that are envisioned for the future, the organizations and professionals that integrated the group will: 1.Conduct effective interventions in conflict situations in South America with appropriate methodologies. The network will provide members with a series of opportunities to intervene in social and environmental conflicts in their countries, through the following strategies: a.FFLA will manage an "Immediate Response Fund" which will facilitate members' access to small amounts of money to rapidly intervene in crisis situations in their countries, thus preventing escalation, avoiding costs of late interventions, and creating conditions for dialogue and negotiation. b.The network will engage with international institutions and development agencies to provide them with assistance to deal with social and environmental conflict related to their work. 2.Design and facilitate two regional dialogue meetings: FFLA and CBI will convene two other network meetings to discuss the documented case studies and the interventions that are being undertaken. FFLA and CBI will invite policymakers as a means to motivate their interest in these issues and raise awareness among them. Advocacy activities outlined in the first meeting will be evaluated and a more comprehensive regional advocacy strategy will be designed which may include the following objectives: a.To raise awareness among South American policy makers and provide them with tools to assess, prevent and resolve conflicts over natural resources. b.To include conflict risk analysis methodologies in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment processes (EIA and SIA). c.To promote dialogue with affected communities affected by resource exploitation activities. d.To work with the private sector to ensure that resource extraction and industrial development contribute to environmental security. e.To produce a set of recommended regional policy strategies. 3.Implementation of advocacy strategy. Once the advocacy strategy has been designed, members will be in charge of implementing it at the national level and FFLA will be responsible for regional coordination of efforts. Each member may decide how best to approach targeted audiences in their own countries. 4.Document and publish results: FFLA and CBI will document the results of the meetings and key findings. To promote learning between organizations, the results will be integrated into a report on environment and security and conflict prevention and resolution methodologies.
