Improving the Visibility and Gauging the Impact of the Civil Society Sector
Support the preparation of the "UN Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions in the System of National Accounts", which will provide a comprehensive statistical view of the scope, structure, scale and contributions of civil society organizations in the region. A strong civil society participating in the design and implementation of public policies is essential for the effective functioning of democracy and for achieving sustainable and equitable development. This being the case, the proposed project will help to understand the civil society sector in the region by providing basic data on the scale and contributions of these organizations. National economic statistics and reliable data on the nonprofit sector will help to strengthen the interaction among state, market and civil society, so they may cooperate in economic and social policies to benefit the region.
