IDB, UNICEF, OAS, Plan International, Electoral Tribunal of Panama and the Korean Government will hold a Regional Conference on the Registration of Identity from September 21 through 22
The Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean on the Right to Identity and Universal Birth Registration calls upon government authorities, registrars and international experts to move forward in the commitments undertaken to reduce underreporting of identity existing among five-year-old minors in the region by 10%.
The conference is organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Plan International Electoral Tribunal of Panamá, Korean Government, which will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental Miramar in Panama City from September 21 through 22, 2011.
Key issues will be discussed at the event regarding progress made and challenges faced to attain free, universal and timely birth registration for all boys and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2015. Representatives of the government and the society of several countries will share their experiences and lessons in implementing programs to increase recording levels at the national level.
People without an identity document are considered “invisible” by society, and they have no chance to exercise their rights or access social benefits. Lack of a birth certificate among the poorest strata has a direct bearing on the level of social inclusion in a country’s population.
Journalists who wish to participate from September 21 through 22 may send an e-mail to mildredr@iadb.org, isanchez@unicef.org or sign up directly at the Hotel Intercontinental Miramar.
