Delegates of the international donor community will take part in a consultative group meeting in Washington on November 27-28 to reaffirm their support for Guatemala’s peace process, an effort launched in 1996 to foster national reconciliation, political stability, social justice and economic growth after 36 years of civil war.
Guatemala President Alfonso Portillo and Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique V. Iglesias will address the meeting, which will be held at the IDB’s headquarters in Washington, DC. The inaugural ceremony, which is scheduled to start at 9.00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, will be open to the media.
During the two-day meeting Guatemalan officials, civil society leaders and delegates from donor nations and multilateral institutions will discuss Guatemala’s recent economic reforms and its plans to take additional steps to implement the Peace Accords and its poverty reduction strategy.
