IDB Group Unveils the Finalists of its Superheroes of Development 2025 Contest

WASHINGTON – The IDB Group has announced the six finalists of Superheroes of Development, an initiative that honors learning in Bank-funded development projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The three winning projects will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on October 8.

After thoroughly considering all entries, the judges for this contest narrowed down the projects to the following finalists:

  • Bolivia: Communities in Transformation: Self-governance and financial inclusion / IDB Lab
  • Brazil: Hospital Albert Einstein: Private management of public hospitals can save lives / IDB Invest
  • Honduras: Program to Foster Camaraderie at Schools in Honduras / IDB
  • Panama:  From Crisis to Legacy for Latin America: Surviving, transforming and transcending/ IDB Lab
  • Panama: Sparks of Connection: Electrifying hope in Panama's remote communities / IDB
  • Peru:  Internet For All, Connecting the Unconnected / IDB Invest

These projects overcame challenges during implementation, developed transformational solutions, and identified lessons that can guide other countries in the region facing similar issues.

Superheroes of Development is an initiative of BIDAcademy, the IDB Group's knowledge and learning platform. As the region's knowledge bank, the IDB is committed to sharing practices and experiences that make projects more effective and expand their impact. It systematically disseminates lessons relevant to optimizing, monitoring, and evaluating the projects it finances. Superheroes of Development is designed for that purpose.

The five finalists were selected by a panel of IDB Group experts and participated in two categories:

  1. IDB and IDB Lab projects that are currently in progress or have ended since January 2016.
  2. IDB Invest Projects with a final evaluation report (Expanded Supervision Report—XSR) that is completed or currently being drafted.

The six finalists will present their projects on October 8 to a panel of senior IDB officers, who will select the three winners. The ceremony is open to the public, in-person and online.

The IDB will also share these success stories throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to improve projects currently underway and inform the preparation of new projects.
