The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Brazilian Ministry of Sports have teamed up to organize a conference on how major sports events can leave a positive and lasting development impact.
The World Cup 2014 to be held in Brazil represents a unique opportunity for the country to maximize the economic, environmental and social benefits well beyond the event itself. The IDB and the Brazilian Ministry of Sports have partnered to promote a “Sustainable Copa,” which kicks off with an international conference to share ideas and best practices in the field.
The event, to take place in Manaus, Sept. 28-29, and will bring together officials from the 12 Brazilian host cities and international experts from former and future hosts such as Korea, Germany, South Africa, England and Spain, as well as experts from the private sector, FIFA and civil society organizations.
Speakers will include Orlando Silva, Brazil's Minister of Sports, Brazil's Minister of Planning Miriam Belchior, Izabella Teixeira, Minister of Environment of Brazil; Omar Aziz, Governor of the State of Amazonas; Amazonino Mendes, Mayor of Manaus; Federico Addiechi, FIFA's Director of Corporate Social Responsibility; Denise Hamu, Representative of UNEP in Brasil.
The conference is organized in cooperation with Brazilian Ministry of Environment, Government State of Amazonas, Mayor of Manaus and the Korean Knowledge Partnership Fund KPK.
