How can innovation help cities be more inclusive?

Call for proposals 2014 for urban innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation, China’s premiere institute in the field of urban development strategies, launched the call for proposals 2014 for urban innovation. The Fiscal and Municipal Management Division of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will work together with the Guangzhou Institute to bring innovation and improve the social, economic and environmental sustainability in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and to promote the Guangzhou International Award for Urban innovation.

By taking an active role in disseminating the Award, the IDB will engage with the Institute on promoting sustainable urban development strategies, encouraging creative solutions in LAC and build up global peer-to-peer learning.

The Guangzhou Award, co-hosted by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis) and the City of Guangzhou, is a opportunity for sharing and exchange lessons learned from successful innovation. By engaging the LAC region, China will be able to further understand the development challenges facing LAC, and the IDB will acquire resources from experiences across the world in order to address the region’s challenges.

The Guangzhou Award aims at recognizing and fostering pioneering policies, strategies, projects and practices in urban development. It presents a unique opportunity for the Bank to share and disseminate key achievements in urban development throughout the LAC region.

The Guangzhou Award will be granted to up to five (5) cities for each award cycle. Each of the winning cities will receive a $20,000 cash prize, a trophy and a commemorative certificate designed for the award. The winners of the Guangzhou Award are also invited to attend special events including the Guangzhou International Conference on Urban Innovation, an exhibition and the award ceremony. The Guangzhou Award is open to all cities and regions worldwide.
