Honduras to promote social integration and coexistence in vulnerable areas with IDB support

Loan for $17.2 million will support urban infrastructure, social and environmental services, and strengthening of community organizations

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $17.2 million loan to implement comprehensive improvement projects in 14 poor communities in the cities of Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, the two cities with the highest population density in Honduras.  The objective is to improve their living conditions and strengthening community relations with the beneficiary communities.

This project expects to help more than 14,000 people who reside in these communities by improving their access to basic services such as drinking water, sewerage, storm drainage, roads, parks and basic social infrastructure.

Also, it will support these communities with training and technical assistance to develop their skills in community organization and expand their working skills. Given the importance of women in community social dynamics, its leadership will be promoted in activities of organization, participation and training.

The program addresses important issues such as the deficit in basic infrastructure and social problems in the community. With a comprehensive intervention, actions envisaged in this program seek to positively impact on the levels of security of the community and in the socio-economic conditions of its inhabitants.

The IDB financing consists of a $12.04 million loan from the ordinary capital for a 30-year term, a 5½-year grace period, and a single currency facility fixed rate of interest; and a $5.16 million loan from the Fund for Special Operations for a term and grace period of 40 years and an interest rate of 0.25 percent.
