Experts to Share Innovative Solutions for Progress in Latin America and the Caribbean

The IDB Group’s Knowledge Week will cover the major issues like artificial intelligence and climate change that are already shaping the region’s future

On October 23–27, the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) will hold Knowledge Week 2023, an online and in-person event featuring over 45 internationally renowned speakers and experts. The event focuses on the transformational power of knowledge as a fundamental driver of wealth and an essential resource for social and economic development.

The overarching theme of this event, which the IDB Group is organizing for the second time, is the crucial of knowledge in effective development and in generating impact in the region. The in-person sessions will be held at the IDB headquarters in Washington DC, with special sessions in Brasília and São Paulo, in Brazil.

Knowledge Week will commence on Monday, October 23 with a conversation about effectiveness in development between Michael Kremer, the 2019 Nobel laureate in economics, and Amanda Glassman, executive advisor to the IDB president.

Among other topics, Knowledge Week’s program will address how to scale up high-quality social services, the role of infrastructure in sustainable development, the promise and threats of artificial intelligence, and the consequences of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Other experts set to participate in the event include Jane Goodall, scientist and conservationist; Susan Athey, professor of economics at the University of Stanford; Sir Ronald Cohen, considered the father of social investment and of British venture capital; Albert-László Barabási, professor of network science at Northeastern University; and Edward Hoffman, former chief knowledge officer of NASA.

On the final day of Knowledge Week, Friday, October 27, the five finalists of the Superheroes of Development 2023 initiative will present their projects to a panel of senior IDB officers. This initiative honors creative and innovative solutions implemented within development projects funded by the IDB Group in Latin America and the Caribbean. IDB President Ilan Goldfajn will be in attendance.

Since its inception, the IDB has worked to be the region’s premier knowledge partner, and it is well aware of the role that knowledge plays in reaching higher levels of development, replicating successes, and avoiding errors. In its role as a knowledge bank, the IDB believes that Latin America and the Caribbean can provide answers to shared global threats to the future of the planet and that efficient use of evidence and data for decision-making is critical to achieving this aim.

Those interested in attending Knowledge Week 2023, whether in person or online, can register here free of charge. Attendees can participate in conversations, ask questions during daily sessions, and form part of a global community focused on generating knowledge, sharing lessons learned, and presenting innovative solutions to today’s challenges.
