Art news: April–May 2002

Following is a selection of recent events organized by the IDB Cultural Center at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Argentine philosopher/anthropologist Néstor García Canclini offered a lecture on Cultural Industries in the Development Crisis in Latin America on April 8. Part of the Cultural Center’s Culture and Development Series, the lecture was presented in collaboration with the OAS Unit for Social Development and Education.

Argentine biographer and journalist Victoria Verlichak, presented her biography (in Spanish), Marta Traba: Una terquedad furibunda on April 25. Verlichak’s book chronicles Traba’s life as a journalist, novelist, professor, art historian, publisher and artistic entrepreneur.

Uruguayan actress China Zorrilla, delivered a monologue in Spanish entitled Había una vez… (anécdotas optimistas de mi vida). Zorrilla has starred in dozens of film, television and theatre productions over the course of a long and distinguished career.

Haitian classical guitarist and composer Amos Coulanges, performed original compositions at the IDB in May. His concert was presented in conjunction with the Embassy of Haiti.

U.S. tango ensemble QuinTango performed a one-hour program of classic tango tunes on May 15 as part of a celebration of the Cultural Center’s 10th Anniversary.

Israeli cellist Gavriel Lipkind presented works by Cassado, Schumann, and a U.S. premiere by late composer Paul Ben-Haim on May 24. The recital was co-sponsored with the Embassy of Israel.
