Each year, during the stages of food production, transportation and processing, food losses amount to more than 220 million tons, representing 12% of all food production in Latin America and the Caribbean. Additionally, another 17% of food is wasted during the stages of commercialization and consumption. This phenomenon occurs in a region where 60 million people suffer from severe food insecurity. #SinDesperdicio aims to change this reality by working on 4 key areas:

#SinDesperdicio is funded by the FEMSA Foundation, Coca-Cola, Grupo Bimbo, and Nestlé. The initiative has direct contributions from the Water and Sanitation Division of the Inter-American Development Bank and in collaboration with IDB Invest and IDB Lab.
The platform also has the collaboration of advisory entities such as the United Nations Environmental Programme UNEP, the Global Foodbanking Network, WRAP, The Consumers Good Forum, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO and the World Resources Institute WRI.
Since the launch of the #SinDesperdicio platform, four innovation contests have been carried out in Argentina, Mexico, Central America and Bogota with the goal of identifying innovative and viable solutions that can impact the problem of food loss and food waste. Each contest had a total of 12 finalists, who had the opportunity to participate in a bootcamp that included workshops about innovation, business models, communication strategies, personal branding, and elevator pitch. One hundred thousand of seed capital has been awarded. Learn more from the contests:
