Aid-for-Trade Strategy in LAC

AfT can help countries identify both foreign private investment and increased donor concessional and non-concessional financing. Mainstreaming trade into countries' development strategies and clarifying needs and priorities will improve access and delivery of resources and ensure ownership and buy-in from recipient countries. AfT can raise awareness of the potential gains available to developing countries from deepened integration into the global economy, identify specific binding constraints that prevent countries from fully realizing the benefits of trade, and identify how AfT will address those constraints. The objective of this KCP is to strengthen AfT in LAC, by means of supporting institutional and technical capacity in three (3) countries and in the Caribbean by promoting intra-regional cooperation in the region as a whole. It is also intended to provide greater clarity on SSC and to develop innovative mechanisms for its delivery. The results of this KCP are: (1) Both national and regional strategies identifying trade-related priorities, gaps, and proposed activities for funding by donors and investors; (2) Increased coordination between donors and between donors and the country; (3) Increased knowledge on alternative donors and financing mechanisms; (4) Institutional-strengthening through the elaboration of the strategies; and (5) A closing of the gap between the demand and the supply of Aft.
