Strengthening of Transformation Activities in the Forestry Productive Chain

The community of the Carare-Opón that concentrate their productive activity on wood extraction face serious problems, specially concerning the sustainability of this activity, due to the following reasons: i) they haven't introduced new technologies they will lead them to maximize and maximize the required value added given to the wood ii) they still depend on intermediaries to commercialize their wood who buy their production at low prices iii) the rural population do not have enough resources in order to be able to transport the wood when it is required.

This intermediary process does not allow the region communities to identify the forestry activity as a source of development and life improvement. Due to this, it is necessary to consolidate the relationship between the different agents that are involved in the forestry chain, with the objective of bringing all the income that is obtained from the commercial forestry activity to ASOCARARE.

The objective is to reactivate the forestry activity in the Carare-Opón region within a framework of innovation and value added generation that will allow improving the project's beneficiary's life style.

General Objective:

Consolidate the process of generating an increase in the value added given to the extracted wood that come from the Carare Opón region.

Adequate a primary wood transformation center that will provide new products (with value added) to the market

Specific Objectives:

Use ASOCARARE's know how in order to generate value added to the extracted wood
Consolidate a supply wood chain
Enter the market of secondary transformed wood
Provide industrial training (use and maintenance of tools and equipment)

Component 1: Development of new products

Make physical, mechanic and other tests to different wood species in order to be able to chose 20 new types to introduce to the market
Systemize the characteristics and potential uses of the investigated species
Market for the product definition

Component 2: Optimize productive process

Study on the production capacities, plant distribution and program production
Training in characterization and machinery maintenance and tools.
Implementation of activities that will reduce production losses
Adaptation of the new primary transformations center

Component 3: Market linkages

Establishment of strategic alliances (with the wood industry sector)
Identification and consolidation of various co financing alternatives that might fund activities concerning the forestry productive chain

Component 4: Management and Administration

Managerial, administrative and accounting training
Determine the production standards that should be provided to each sector of the wood industry (secondary transformation)
Design of a methodological proposal for the creation of new products

Component 5: Follow ¿ up and evaluation

Beneficiaries: Members of ASOCARARE

Expected Results: Consolidate a forestry nucleus in the Carare Opón Region
