Agribusiness, Construction and Tourism Could Drive Central America’s Economy in 2023

A new Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) study points to agribusiness, construction and tourism as the industries with the greatest potential to generate jobs and growth in Central America, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
The study found that higher production in these industries could galvanize the regional economy in 2023 for two reasons: the large volume of inputs they require from all other industries, and their economic clout, since they account for 22% of the region’s output.

Guatemala to Revamp Northern Road Corridor with IDB Support

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $175 million loan to widen approximately 35 kilometers of the El Rancho–Teculután section of northern Highway CA-9 in Guatemala. The program is a strategic and crucial step towards expanding the country’s main route for exports, a process already in progress.
The engineering works will benefit the approximately 25,281 people who travel this section of the highway daily and will give better road access to 442,375 people in the departments of El Progreso and Zacapa.

Bolivia to Improve Road Connections in La Paz with IDB Support

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $50 million loan to better connect the Department of La Paz and further integrate its economy. This funding will be used to improve and pave a 33.1 kilometer stretch of Highway RVF19 Botijlaca-Caquiaviri, lowering travel costs and times.
With a focus on safety, sustainability, and inclusion, the program will also implement better road safety standards, and the roadworks will be engineered to meet climate-resilient design standards.

Ilan Goldfajn Elected IDB President

Ilan Goldfajn was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) today during a Special Meeting of the Bank’s Board of Governors. The meeting was held at IDB Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with delegations attending virtually and in person.
Nominated by Brazil, Goldfajn will take office for a five-year term on December 19, 2022.
