The Gender and Diversity Unit of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has launched the Bank‘s first online discussion forum on policies to advance social inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. The purpose of the forum is to create a community of practice among academics, NGOs, policy makers and other stakeholders, and to review five country-specific studies (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) being conducted by the IDB.

Spain’s Minister of Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal, announced a 2 million euro commitment to the Inter-American Development Bank’s Knowledge Economy Fund. The announcement coincides with the VI Summit of European Union and Latin American and Caribbean heads of state, which takes place in Madrid on Tuesday, May 18. The Summit’s main topic is bi-regional cooperation in innovation and technology to foster sustainable growth and social inclusion.

The President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, called on the international community to strengthen cooperation in finding solutions to the challenges facing indigenous populations in the region. “A constant effort of this institution is to take on the priorities of the indigenous people’s in its operations to contribute to their development, respecting their rights and diverse identities,” Moreno said during an event at the IDB headquarters in Washington.

Ministers from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Dominican Republic will attend the meeting.
