Branson, Mottley to Speak at IDB’s Inaugural Pivot Event

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Richard Branson and Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley are two of the high-profile speakers scheduled to open the inaugural Pivot Event organized by the Inter-American Development Bank and partners. The event which starts on October 15th, will be a virtual five-day gathering of pioneering thinkers in the Caribbean region. They are expected to harness big ideas into a manifesto for driving Caribbean transformation.

IDB launches 2020 call for proposals for regional projects in Latin America and Caribbean

IDB launches 2017 Call for Proposals to promote Regional Public Goods in Latin America and the Caribbean

The deadline for accepting proposals is April 26th, 2017 The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) launched the 2017 Call for Proposals of the Initiative for the Promotion of Regional Public Goods in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), which supports projects aimed at resolving shared challenges and seizing opportunities for development through regional cooperation among at least three countries. Since 2004, the RPG Initiative has financed 140 projects, investing a total of more than US$103 million.

Emsula launches innovative solar power project financed by the IDB

Event inaugurated by the President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernández On March 20, Embotelladora de Sula S.A. (Emsula) of the Corinsa Group inaugurated the largest photovoltaic rooftop solar system in Latin America in its facilities, located in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.This project was financed with support from the IDB and will contribute 3MW to a facility that bottles soft drinks, juices and purified water for various companies, including Pepsi, Gatorade and Lipton Tea.

Innovation is the key to sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean

The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are making comparatively low investments in research and development, and the region’s private sector is also comparatively under-represented in R&D spending, according to a new study by the Inter-American Development Bank. Through a comparative analysis of R&D investments in developed countries, the study, entitled “The need to innovate,” concludes that companies in Latin America and the Caribbean have favored technology procurement strategies instead of promote endogenous generation of technology and new ideas.

The Program in Technologies for Financial Inclusion has selected the twenty best ideas among 420 submissions that resulted from its first convocation, made up of a diverse compilation of proposals for technological solutions that suggest innovation, inclusion, and various financial services like micro-insurance, credits, payments and savings.  The second phase of the program starts now in which the twenty winning ideas will receive help in order to develop a business plan with measurable results.   

Central America's integration is in full swing

Spain commits 2 million Euros to IDB Knowledge Economy Fund

Spain’s Minister of Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal, announced a 2 million euro commitment to the Inter-American Development Bank’s Knowledge Economy Fund. The announcement coincides with the VI Summit of European Union and Latin American and Caribbean heads of state, which takes place in Madrid on Tuesday, May 18. The Summit’s main topic is bi-regional cooperation in innovation and technology to foster sustainable growth and social inclusion.

Cross Debarment: A new global tool against corruption

The cross debarment agreement signed recently by the world’s top multilateral banks is a milestone for the anticorruption agenda.  Due to come into force by mid-year, the agreement says that if one Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) declares a firm or individual ineligible for procurement contracts because of fraud and corruption, then all the other MDBs will do the same.
