Event on migration analyzes impact on Latin America MADRID - Spain has made a $5 million contribution to help the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) tackle urgent development challenges posed by the rise of transborder migrations in Latin America and the Caribbean. The contribution was announced at the conference Migration and Cities: The Road to Inclusive Integration held March 20, 2019 in Madrid.

In its second edition, the call for proposals will be open from March 4th to May 17th, 2019. The Superheroes of Development Award will recognize executing agencies of IDB-financed projects that have successfully addressed challenges during its implementation. The contest will identify eight finalists from across Latin America and the Caribbean who will travel to IDB’s Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to present their solutions.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has joined forces with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to launch an initiative that will benefit more than 4,000 young people through sports in Argentina. The project, which will be financed by US$1.5 million commitments from the IDB’s Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) and the IOC, was formally announced in Buenos Aires, Argentina as IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno and IOC President Thomas Bach signed a Letter of Intent.

The IDB through its Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), Natural Capital Lab, Sustainable Islands Platform, and in alliance with the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility, which is also supported by DFID, CDB and the Government of Canada, will identify firms and organizations looking to pilot and scale up business models that use cutting edge technologies to contribute to the sustainable management of oceans, marine ecosystems and coastal resources.

The Inter-American Development Bank will hold a business plan competition for Caribbean tourism projects involving low-income communities in their value chains. The contest, organized by the IDB’s Opportunities for the Majority Initiative, is open to companies based in the Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Latin America should carry out microeconomic reforms to clear the path for more poor people to join the middle class, instead of locking itself in a debate over fiscal discipline and social spending, former U.S. president Bill Clinton said today. In a public dialogue with the president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, Clinton also commented on current issues such as immigration, alternative energy sources, climate change and the fight against AIDS.

Dwellings, rural properties and businesses in the informal or “extralegal” sector of 12 Latin American countries are worth more than $1.2 trillion, according to a report presented today at a conference at the Inter-American Development Bank. IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno said the study on informality in Latin America and the Caribbean, together with other research on poverty conducted or sponsored by the Bank, will help guide a new development initiative, Building Opportunity for the Majority.
